FUEL CMS is a modular-based hybrid of a framework and a content management system. It’s developed on the popular CodeIgniter PHP web framework and allows you to create your models, views and controllers like normal and only use the CMS part when and if you need it.

FUEL CMS evolved out of the need for having a development platform that was a Framework first and a CMS second. CodeIgniter fit the bill as a lightweight PHP framework that didn’t try and do too much behind the scenes. It allowed them to cleanly structure our code and use MVC principles.

They developed it so it could be easily integrated into your existing projects allowing you to select where and how you want to use the CMS. The interface is highly customizable and easily extensible with modules.

Newswall is a tool to display feeds and e-mails. Just like on a “news wall” all messages – sorted by date and time – show up in small blocks, if possible together with an image.

That way it is easy to find the most important and interesting news and then have a closer look at these. So it is sort of a feed reader mixed with an e-mail viewer having the look of an image gallery.

To install the script you need a webserver with PHP (tested with Apache2 and PHP 5.2.3), there’s no need for a database. It has been tested on Firefox 3, Safari 4, IE 8 and Chrome.

Code reviews play an integral part in the development process for making quality software. We can find out security holes, memory leaks, poor queries and heavy file structures from code reviews. Unfortunately, these reviews are also very time consuming.

We spend a lot of time echoing queries, memory stats and objects to the browser just to see how they are being used in the code. To reduce this repetition, Ryan Campbell has invested some time creating the PHP Quick Profiler (PQP). It’s a small tool (think Firebug for PHP) to provide profiling and debugging related information to developers without needing them to add a lot of programmatic overhead to their code.

Now, we only need to toggle one config setting to true and we can have access to an automated tool to help create a faster and more consistent review experience. Since anyone can use it, PQP also gives the initial developer an idea of where their code stands before the review.

debugConsole is a tool for easily debugging and tracing PHP5 applications both on production and development servers without effecting the live-traffic.

Normally, PHP functions enable us to inspect variables, watch changes in them, set checkpoints and write logfiles.

Additionally, debugConsole replaces the PHP error handling so that notices, warnings and errors are shown in a popup too, rather than displaying them in the application to be debugged. Optionally, IP-based access restrictions can be set to make sure that the popup opens for only developers but not for visitors. The tool can be configured to debug a given timespan and checkpoints can be added in your scripts to check which lines of code were passed. Also, you can filter events and record the logs into files for future inspection.
